Post-Treatment Instructions for Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is an essential treatment to address periodontal disease by reducing bacterial buildup and inflammation. This deep cleaning smooths tooth roots and removes plaque, promoting gum health and healing. Follow these instructions to ensure a successful recovery.

1. Diet

  • Soft Foods:
    • If chewing hard foods (e.g., meat, raw vegetables) causes discomfort, stick to soft options like soups, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, or yogurt until chewing feels comfortable.
  • Temperature Sensitivity:
    • Avoid very hot or cold foods and beverages for at least 2 hours after the procedure to prevent sensitivity-related discomfort.

2. Smoking and Tobacco Use

  • Healing Interference:
    • Smoking or using tobacco products slows healing and can irritate treated gums. Refrain from using these products during recovery for optimal healing.

3. Warm Salt Water Rinse

  • Soothing Rinse:
    • Mix ¼ teaspoon of salt in ½ cup of room-temperature water to create a soothing solution.
  • Frequency:
    • Rinse gently for 1 minute, twice daily for the first 3 days to soothe gums and reduce inflammation.

4. Oral Hygiene

  • Daily Care:
    • Continue brushing and flossing as directed, following any special periodontal instructions. Good oral hygiene is vital to preventing further gum disease.
  • Avoid Flossing on the Day of Treatment:
    • Postpone flossing in the treated areas on the day of your procedure.
  • Gentle Brushing:
    • If gums are sensitive, use a soft-bristle toothbrush and brush gently around treated areas.
  • Gradual Return to Flossing:
    • Resume flossing in treated areas once sensitivity decreases. Be thorough but gentle to avoid irritation.

5. Pain and Discomfort

  • Sensitivity:
    • Temporary sensitivity to temperature or discomfort may occur but should subside within a few days.
  • Over-the-Counter Pain Relief:
    • If needed, take ibuprofen or acetaminophen as directed to manage discomfort. Follow dosage instructions carefully.
