Teeth Whitening

In office Zoom whitening in Procedure:
The complete procedure takes around an hour, but regular teeth cleaning is recommended prior to the actual Zoom teeth whitening session.

The procedure begins with a short preparation to cover the lips and gums, leaving only your teeth exposed.
The dentist applies the Zoom hydrogen peroxide whitening gel, which works in conjunction with the Zoom light penetrating the teeth and breaking up stains to reform any discoloration. The gel remains in place for 15 minutes while the light is activated. During this time, you can relax and listen to music.

The gel is applied for three “15-minutes sessions” of light activation, for a total treatment time of minimum 45 minutes to an hour.  Individuals with a strong gag reflex or anxiety may have difficulty undergoing the entire procedure. Immediately afterwards, a sensitivity-reducing fluoride paste-gel is applied to the teeth.

The Home Whitening Procedure:
It is important that you apply the teeth whitening gel properly so you do not waste any of it and that you experience the least amount of sensitivity while using this product.

Prior to Treatment:

Brush and floss before bleaching your teeth. The whitening gel is most effective when your teeth are clean. Try using the trays at first without applying the bleach to check if it fits your mouth. Make sure that the bleaching trays are clean and dry before applying the whitening gel because moisture reduces its efficiency and slows down the entire process.

Applying the Bleaching Gel:
When you apply the product make sure not to fill the trays. Place a SMALL drop of the teeth whitening gel filling half the inner front surface of the tray, without spreading bleach around. The average treatment per arch requires approximately 0.5ml of whitening gel.

Inserting the Bleaching Trays:

Insert the whitening tray over your teeth after drying them as much as possible with a tissue. Place the tray firmly against the teeth. Wipe the excess gel which seeps over the brim of the tray onto your gums with a cotton swab. Wear the tray with the gel as directed below.

Usage Time:
We recommend using the tray with the bleach for 2 hours or as advised by the dentist (depending on the product).

If sensitivity develops – use it only for 1 hour and put on both trays at the same time during bleaching process.

After Whitening:

Remove the tray, rinse off your teeth, brush any remaining gel away, floss and continue your usual dental cleaning routine. You may initially notice white splotches on your teeth following the removal of the tray. This phenomenon occurs when dehydration takes place, and should recede within an hour. Do not consume edibles that may leave stains on your teeth for an hour following the procedure (i.e. coffee, tea, berries, and mustard).

Caring for Your Trays and Gel:

Clean the whitening trays with a toothbrush or a Q-tip and cold water. Store trays in the tray holder and the gel in a cool dry place away from heat and direct sunlight. The gel may be refrigerated to prolong its shelf life, but should not be frozen.

Dental whitening gels can be refrigerated for a longer shelf life. Without refrigeration, its Shelf life could last for a 1 year or up to 2 years if placed in a cold environment. These are general recommendations and may vary between manufacturers. Please read the manufacturer’s instructions. Use only in accordance with these instructions.

Aftercare: Maintaining Whitening Effects
Patients will receive a Zoom home-use touch-up kit that includes custom-fitted whitening trays. Follow your dentist’s instructions for the know-how usage of this touch-up kit.
To help maintain the whitening effects of your treatment, your dentist may advise you to avoid certain foods and beverages, or consume them in moderation to avoid staining your teeth. This includes tea, coffee, red wine, cola, etc.
Additionally, tobacco products will stain the teeth, even after whitening treatments. As such, your specialist will suggest you quit using them. Maintain an appropriate oral hygiene (brushing and flossing) regimen to prevent stains from reforming, and see your dentist and hygienist regularly for scheduled teeth cleanings.
Toothpastes containing whitening agents also may be suggested by your dentist to maintain the results of the procedure.

Sensitivity during treatment may occur with some people. The Zoom light produces minimal heat, which may sometimes cause discomfort. Rarely, minor tingling is experienced immediately after the procedure, but always dissipates. Ask your dentist for an anti-sensitivity toothpaste prior to treatment to lessen the discomfort.
As with other whitening products, Zoom is not recommended for children under 13 years of age, or for pregnant or lactating women. Also, it is important to remember that whitening treatments may not be as effective for some people as it is for others. Only your dentist can determine if teeth whitening is right for you after performing a thorough oral examination including a shade assessment.
